Over 90 percent of schools are successfully meeting new meal nutrition standards, serving meals with more whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean protein and low-fat dairy, and less sodium and fat. These new grants provide support to schools to help them achieve or continue to meet those standards. Fruits of the diabetes research

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

Like sweets? Fruits are sweet, and a study indicates these sweets can lower the risk of diabetes. At the Harvard School of Public Health, researcher Qi Sun saw signs of this in data from 1984 to 2008 on more than 187,000 people.

He compared people who ate at least two servings a week of certain whole fruits – particularly blueberries, grapes and apples – with people who ate less than one serving a month. The fruit eaters had a 23 percent lower risk of diabetes.

Alcohol in the movies

A study indicates movies rated for teen audiences are showing more alcohol. Elaina Bergamini of Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire looked at data on hit movies from 1996 through 2009. She says appearances of branded alcohol in movies rated G, PG- and PG-13 rose from 80 to 145 a year.

Bergamini says there are controls on tobacco appearances, and they were not rising, but alcohol lacks similar controls. Alcohol in the movies

Are Older Adults Getting Sharper Mentally?

Men and women who reached their mid-90s in 2010 were mentally sharper than those who hit that mark a decade earlier, according to a Danish cohort study.

The finding is a challenge to the "failure-of-success" hypothesis, in which increased longevity, caused by lowering death from chronic diseases, actually leads to an overall decline in the health of elderly people, according to Kaare Christensen, MD, of the University of Southern Denmark in Odense, Denmark, and colleagues.
